Brief
The clients wanted to transform their sloping Avalon property into a functional outdoor environment centred around a swimming pool and entertaining space. The brief called for a landscape that felt relaxed and natural while complementing the architecture of the home and the surrounding bushland setting.
The space needed to incorporate a pool suitable for family use, generous outdoor entertaining areas and lush planting to create privacy and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
Approach
The design and construction focused on creating a series of outdoor spaces that flow naturally from the house and connect the pool, entertaining terrace and garden.
A concrete swimming pool was carefully positioned to maximise sunlight and views across the garden while maintaining strong visual connection to the home. Large format paving was used throughout the pool surrounds to create clean architectural lines and a seamless transition between the house and outdoor entertaining areas. The pool terrace incorporates frameless glass fencing to maintain open views across the landscape, while a custom outdoor dining area and pergola create a comfortable space for entertaining.
Extensive structural landscaping was undertaken across the sloping site, including natural stone retaining walls and tiered garden beds to establish planting areas and improve circulation throughout the garden. The planting palette was designed to complement the coastal bushland setting, combining tropical and subtropical species to create a lush, layered landscape that provides privacy, shade and year-round interest.
Outcome/Result
The completed landscape delivers a resort-like outdoor environment that integrates the pool, entertaining spaces and surrounding gardens into one cohesive outdoor experience. The pool now forms the centrepiece of the garden, framed by generous terraces and lush planting that soften the architecture and connect the home to its natural surroundings. Multiple outdoor spaces allow the clients to relax, entertain and enjoy the landscape throughout the year, while the layered planting design will continue to mature and enhance the garden over time.
The project was recognised with a Silver Award in the 2023 Landscape Excellence Awards, highlighting the quality of construction and the successful integration of architecture, pool and landscape.
