Brief
The clients wanted to transform their outdoor space into a functional family garden that balanced relaxation, entertaining and play. The brief focused on creating a soft, green environment that felt private and established, while also incorporating practical elements such as outdoor seating areas, level lawn spaces for children and a dedicated play zone. A strong connection to the home was important, with the landscape needing to feel like a natural extension of the indoor

Approach
The project centred around creating a series of connected outdoor spaces that respond to both the architecture of the home and the existing mature trees on site.

A timber deck was constructed to transition seamlessly from the house into the garden, forming a comfortable outdoor living area for lounging and entertaining. The surrounding planting was designed to soften the built elements and create a lush, private setting. The garden was carefully regraded to provide usable lawn areas, while retaining and edging elements were introduced to define planting zones and manage level changes.

A custom-built children’s play area was integrated into the landscape, including a cubby structure and play equipment, allowing the space to function for both adults and family use without compromising the overall aesthetic. Existing trees were retained and incorporated into the design, with new layered planting introduced to enhance the established garden feel and provide shade, texture and depth throughout the space.

Outcome/Result
The completed garden provides a relaxed and highly functional outdoor environment that caters to both entertaining and everyday family life. The connection between the home and garden has been significantly improved, with the deck and lawn areas creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living. Lush planting and mature trees establish a sense of privacy and calm, while the integrated play space ensures the garden can be enjoyed by the whole family.

The result is a balanced and inviting landscape that feels established, practical and well suited to the Bondi coastal setting.
