Brief
The brief was to create a highly refined landscape environment that responded sensitively to the home’s contemporary architecture and surrounding bushland setting. Particular focus was placed on establishing a strong connection between the built form and landscape through layered planting, natural materials and carefully integrated circulation spaces. The clients wanted the garden to feel immersive, established and calm while maintaining a restrained material palette suited to the coastal Mosman environment and the architecture of the home.
Approach
Working closely alongside the Emily Simpson Landscape Architecture, Reflective Gardens delivered a detailed landscape environment designed to soften the strong concrete forms of the home while strengthening its relationship with the surrounding site.
Natural sandstone retaining walls salvaged from site, and carefully integrated pathways were introduced to respond to the site’s changing levels and create a series of connected outdoor spaces throughout the garden. Beneath the suspended architectural forms, shaded garden areas were carefully composed using large sandstone boulders, textured groundcovers and layered subtropical planting to create moments of contrast and visual depth.
The planting palette was intentionally restrained and selected to suit the coastal bushland setting, combining native and subtropical species to provide texture, softness and year-round structure throughout the landscape. Particular attention was given to balancing architectural scale with softer organic planting forms to ensure the landscape felt established and timeless within its environment.
Detailed coordination between hardscape construction, retaining, planting and site grading ensured the landscape integrated seamlessly with the architecture while maintaining a natural and relaxed character throughout the property.
Outcome/Result
The completed landscape establishes a calm and immersive outdoor environment that feels intrinsically connected to both the architecture and surrounding natural setting.
Layered planting, natural sandstone and carefully resolved circulation spaces soften the home’s strong built forms while creating a series of intimate garden experiences throughout the site. The landscape now provides a highly functional yet understated setting that enhances the architectural character of the residence without competing with it.
